Higgins shares his enthusiasm:
A few years ago, thanks to my time on Power Rangers, I was able to discover and learn more about Tokusatsu. With its unique conventions and inspirations, Tokusatsu – and particularly Ultraman – has been an enormous source of joy for me, Higgins told Marvel. It's a genre so rich with potential, even in terms of the structure of superhero storytelling. It's both an honor and a privilege to be bringing Ultraman into the Marvel world.
Groom adds insightful commentary:
Monsters have long embodied our fears and dark impulses through literature and film, representing the worst aspects of ity, Groom shares. But Eiji Tsuburaya understood these threats on an unparalleled scale, conceptualizing them as towering entities – alien, unknowable, and angry. Yet, he envisioned us rising above our darker nature and embracing a more noble way to confront adversity. He envisioned ULTRAMAN. In this complex world of lies and contradictions, we're about to uncover what that means...”
The Ultraman franchise is deeply rooted in Japan's kju-fighting tradition, with its history stretching back to the 1960s. Tsuburaya Productions was founded by legary special effects pioneer Eiji Tsuburaya 1901-1970, a key figure behind iconic Japanese science fiction films and TV series including Godzilla as well as the Ultraman series.
Starting with Ultra Q in 1966, which shares some similarities to The X-Files and The Outer Limits, this series gave birth to Ultraman also 1966, a giant alien who fights kju. This original series was followed by several other iterations featuring different Ultraman protagonists. Ultraman has been a global sensation since its inception in the '80s, with reported sales generating billions of dollars worldwide.
The franchise's popularity led to a string of successful films and TV series such as Ultra Seven 1967, The Return of Ultraman 1971, Ultraman Ace 1972, and many others that followed. Toho's beloved monster has clashed with Marvel heroes, including Avengers, Fantastic Four, Champions, and S.H.I.E.L.D., in licensed comics from the '70s.
Marvel Comics' history with giant monsters spans several decades; they've published anthologies featuring a host of creatures like Groot Tales to Astonish #13, Fin Fang Foom Strange Tales #89, Monstro the Gorilla Journey into Mystery #54, and It! The Living Colossus Astonishing Tales #21. In the '70s, Marvel also ventured into licensing with Shogun Warriors and Godzilla.

This collaboration is not the first time Marvel Comics have explored stories with colossal creatures; in the 1960s and '70s, they published a series featuring an assortment of giant monsters such as Groot Tales to Astonish #13, Fin Fang Foom Strange Tales #89, Monstro the Gorilla Journey into Mystery #54, and It! The Living Colossus Astonishing Tales #21. Furthermore, in the 1970s Marvel also delved into licensed comics with Shogun Warriors and Godzilla.
