This symposium seeks to critically reassess contemporary anime storytelling by scrutinizing favored visual techniques and exploring their implications.
Focusing on fostering a Southeast Asian anime dialogue through formal presentations and informal discussions, this event bridge the gap between research, pedagogy, and practice in animation and manga studies.
Over two-and-a-half days, industry experts from Southeast Asia will share insights on Japanese anime's impact on their es and the unique challenges they encounter. Scholars from diverse backgrounds will delve into innovative research methodologies concerning visual culture, examining anime's multifaceted roles as a product, lifestyle choice, and expressive medium across episodic series, cinematic releases, and online platforms.
On September 12th, attees can look forward to the launch of The Cambridge Companion to Manga and Anime Cambridge University Press, featuring presentations by leading authors from Japan, Malaysia, Singapore, Sweden, and the UK.
