Kyoto Seika University has been a pioneer in manga education since the inception of Japan's first-ever Faculty of Manga and the establishment of its Graduate School of Manga. We are among the most authoritative institutions worldwide dedicated to manga studies, conducting rigorous research med at uncovering the heart of manga rather than merely treating it as a resource or material. The scope of our inquiry is broadened through collaborations with the university’s International Manga Research Center and the Kyoto International Manga Museum, jointly operated by the City of Kyoto.

The Doctoral Program at our Graduate School of Manga equips students with advanced professional competencies through research on mangacomic culture alongside international literature. They present their findings at conferences both domestically and abroad.

Master's Program: Malaysianness in Manga-like Comics explores cultural identity through comic expression; Mixed Media as Adaptation examines Mahiro Maeda’s Gankutsuou case; Otaku-izing Geeks and Geeki-fying Otaku; the role of subculture clusters from a Hungarian producers' perspective.

Doctoral Program: Oblivion and Discovery in 1960s Shojo Manga examines media materiality based on surveys of the Weekly Magazine Margaret 1963-1970.
